Sweet’s buzzer beater leads Pioneer past Winamac in Hoosier North finale

McKaig adds 11 for Panthers

Boys basketball

Pioneer 38, Winamac 36 (Friday): Caleb Sweet scored a game-high 14 points, including the game-winning basket at the buzzer, to give the Pioneer boys basketball team a road win over conference and sectional rival Winamac Friday.

Drew McKaig added 11 points for Pioneer, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Pioneer improved to 4-17, 1-6 Hoosier North. It marked the second straight year that Pioneer finished 1-6 in conference play with the one win being against Winamac.

Brendan Hines led Winamac with 13 points, four of which came on free throws in the fourth quarter. Jayse Bentle scored seven of his 10 in the fourth quarter.

Pioneer won despite making just 4 of 11 free throws.

Pioneer led 17-15 at halftime, but Winamac shrunk the lead to 26-25 after three quarters.
