The only track athletes among area teams to make the IHSAA state finals this spring were two hurdlers from Rochester – Audrey Wagner and Harrison Dunwoody.
But the only two area teams to win conference championships were the Pioneer girls and the Winamac boys.
Here is how they did it.

Pioneer girls
The Pioneer girls had a big four of Michelle Harding, Rachel Harding, Keirsten Nies and Aspen Moolenaar that keyed their triumphs at the Hoosier North meet at Culver May 15.
Pioneer finished with 139.5 points. Runner-up Winamac had 110.5.
Moolenaar won conference titles in both the 300 hurdles (48.07 seconds) and pole vault (10-0), Michelle Harding won the title in the 200 (28.01 seconds), and the foursome combined to win the title in the 4 x 100 relay in 51.48 seconds.
“My favorite thing about my whole team this year is they are racing,” Pioneer coach Teresa Montgomery said. “They’re not just getting out there and running. They are racing, and they’re doing such a fine job of it.”
Montgomery said the girls help each other out.
“A lot of the time I trust them to do the work,” Montgomery said. “And they really coach each other a lot. And not just on the girls team. I have 20 seniors on this team, and most of them have been with me the entire time. And in leadership and knowledge, we really make sure the kids know the sport, not just get out and just do the event. And it has shown. Their leadership is immense. I've cried more this spring than when my own kids were seniors because I’m going to lose so many of them.”
Moolenaar would go on to qualify for regionals in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and pole vault. Montgomery said Moolenaar received special instruction.
“She’s stronger,” Montgomery said. “She’s more experienced. But it has taken a lot of work this year to help her. We had to go back to square one for a little bit and just remember that she knows what she’s doing, but she’s also had Ryan Adams, one of my former vaulters, he vaults at Wabash College now, so he comes back when he gets home, and he gives us some knowledge, and that helps too because we can put all that together. But most of the time, when she relaxes and is confident, she does a great job.”
Michelle Harding advanced to regional in the 200 and long jump, Rachel Harding and Nies both advanced in the high jump.
Other individual area conference champions included Winamac’s Kadence Hoover in both the 1,600 and 3,200 in 5:43.70 and 13:55.67, respectively, and Caston’s Camila Hernandez-Rios in the 400 in 1:03.18.
Caston also won the meet-closing 4 x 400 relay in 4:27.45. The team consisted of Madi Douglass, Camila Hernandez-Rios, Grace Colvin and Hannah Rogers. Rogers ran the anchor, holding off Winamac’s Avery Wegner at the tape just minutes after she finished fourth in the 3,200.
Winamac also won the 4 x 800 relay in 11:19.24. The team consisted of Kadence Hoover, Maci Earp, Claire Goodman and Avery Wegner. They beat Pioneer by 22 seconds for the win.

Winamac boys
Winamac scored 147.5 points and beat runner-up Triton by 23.5 points at the Hoosier North meet at Culver
“Really good,” Winamac coach Bryce Kappes said. “The boys put in a lot of work this year, and it feels good to end it off in our conference season with this victory here.”
The Warriors had two individual conference champs in Charles Disinger, who won both the discus with a throw of 128-10 and the shot put with a toss of 52-7 ½; and fellow junior Logan Fredel, who edged Pioneer’s Dane Bowditch at the tape for the win.
“Logan’s always been one of our more focused guys on the distance side of things,” Kappes said. “And with all the other guys who put in great individual performances, he knew he needed to step up there, and he answered the bell when it was his turn, and we couldn’t be more proud of him.”
But Winamac had second-place finishers in the 200 meters (Ethan Burgess), 400 (Burgess), 800 (Hector Gallegos), 110 hurdles (Kamden Long) and 300 hurdles (Dylan Guilford).
Winamac also finished second behind Pioneer in both the 4 x 400 relay with Guilford, Will Malchow, Kalaeb Pace and Burgess and in the 4 x 800 relay with Gallegos, Malchow, Nathan Pierzchalski and Fredel.
This win could be a tribute to their depth, teamwork and youthful enthusiasm. Guilford was the only senior who scored at conference.
“I got a lot of guys that care and care about each other,” Kappes explained. “And this is a close team, and they work hard, and they know what they have to do to help guys succeed. Our seniors led us all year, and they set the tone early of what we wanted to accomplish this year, and here we are with the trophy.”
Kappes also praised Hayden Taylor, who was sixth in the 100 and fourth in the long jump. And he also said Ethan Burgess’ second-place finish in the 200 “really flipped the meet.” Pierzchalski was third in the 800, fifth in the 1,600 and third in the 3,200. Throw in the 4 x 800 relay leg, and Kappes called it “the gauntlet.”
“Hunter Haschel and Charles Disinger, they dominated,” Kappes added.
Disinger would later advance to the Valparaiso regional in the shot put, Burgess would advance in the 200 and 400, Fredel and Pierzchalski would both advance in the 3,200, and Taylor would move on in the long jump.
The most decorated area athlete was Pioneer senior Leighton Dodt, who won the 400, 800 and 1,600 and also ran a leg on the victorious 4 x 400 relay team. Dodt started his day by winning the 1,600 in 4:49.61 over teammate Dane Bowditch. Then he took the 400, running a 52.67 seconds and beating Burgess by 0.19 seconds. He then took the 800 in 2:17.09 and beat runner-up Gallegos by over two seconds. Austin Brooke, Kaleb Boller and Ian Kitchell joined him on the 4 x 400 relay.
“I pushed him to his max again today because I put him back in that mile,” Montgomery said of Dodt. “It was really back to back to back. The mile, the 400 and the 800 are all right there. He did fantastic. He’s way faster than that if you get him fresh.”
Elliott Cooper, Phillip McFatridge, Brooke and Bowditch formed the 4 x 800 relay team that won in 9:01.52.
Hoosier North girls and boys meets follow. Boys sectional results from Plymouth, Kokomo and Rensselaer are listed after that.
