Valley boys basketball update: Shepherd scores in double figures in all 3 games, but Vikes go 1-2 at Delta

Columbia City 49, Tippecanoe Valley 35 (Dec. 28): Riley Shepherd scored 15 points for the Vikings in a loss to Columbia City in the fifth-place game of the Delta Holiday Invitational on Dec. 28.

No other Valley player had more than six points.

Columbia City led 25-19 at halftime and extended the lead to 39-26 after three quarters.

Stephen Akase scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half as Valley avenged an earlier loss to the Archers in a consolation round game at the Delta Holiday Invitational on Dec. 27.

Ian Cooksey and Riley Shepherd each hit four 3-pointers. Cooksey scored 16, and Shep[herd added 15. Kyler Johnson added nine.

Valley lost at home to Fort Wayne South Side 64-55 on Nov. 28, but in this game, they led 33-26 at halftime and extended the lead to 58-42 after three quarters.

Ian Cooksey

Ian Cooksey and Riley Shepherd had 16 points each, and Stephen Akase had 15, but Valley could not hold on to an eight-point lead after three quarters and lost to Muncie Central in the first round of the Delta Holiday Invitational on Dec. 27.

DeMarkis Cole scored nine of his 16 points in the fourth quarter for the Bearcats. L.J. Strange added 15.

Muncie Central made eight 3-pointers.

Valley led 26-23 after three quarters and extended the lead to 43-35 after three quarters.

Valley lost despite making more free throws (10) than Muncie Central attempted (five).

Stephen Akase scored 19 points, Ian Cooksey had 18, and DeOndre Hamilton 11 as the visiting Vikings bounced back to beat Wheeler one day after falling to Peru.

Davis Cowan added nine, and Kyler Johnson had eight.

Valley led 32-8 after one quarter and extended the margin to 52-20 at halftime.

Peru 55, Tippecanoe Valley 51 (OT, Dec. 15):



Ian Cooksey tallied 21 points, and Stephen Akase added 11, but the visiting Vikings lost to Peru in overtime at Tig-Arena on Dec. 15.

Matt Roettger scored a game-high 24 points for the Tigers, including four in the overtime. Alex Ross added 13.

Peru led 21-20 at halftime and pushed the lead to 35-31 after three quarters before Akse scored seven points in the fourth quarter to create a 47-47 deadlock at the end of regulation.

Valley lost to Peru for the fifth straight year.

Ian Cooksey scored 15 of his team-high 22 points in the third quarter, and Davis Cowan made five of six free throws in the fourth quarter for the host Vikings in a win over John Glenn on Dec. 9.

Stephen Akase also poured in 14 points for Valley, who avenged a loss to John Glenn in last year’s Class 3A, Sectional 18 quarterfinals.

Valley led 12-3 after the first quarter.

Joe Chrapliwy hit four 3-pointers and scored 23 points for John Glenn.

Valley outscored John Glenn 14-3 from the foul line.

Valley will host this year’s sectional from Feb. 27-March 2.

Keagen Holder led the Cherokees (3-2) with 18 points.

Silas Laidig drained four treys and led Bremen with 12.

Cooksey outscored the entire Bremen team 10-7 in the first quarter. The lead was 31-18 at halftime.

Valley improved to 1-2. Bremen dropped to 2-1.
