Volleyball

Valley volleyball at Culver scrimmage: Valley volleyball coach Ashley Derf said she would like to see her team get better at receiving serve following a scrimmage against host Culver Thursday.

“We’ve got to do better at passing,” Derf said when asked if the team had trouble getting the ball to their hitters. “We were throwing our setters into the net a little too much, so we’ve got to adjust our passing. … Going into the game, serve receive is where we’ve got to work the most at.”

Some of the action in the scrimmage involved teams trying to receive serves, and some involved coaches throwing up free balls for teams to handle.

“Especially that first part of the scrimmage, it’s really hard because it’s chaotic,” Derf said. “Because there are free balls coming in, and that’s not how we get free balls. We did a lot of subbing, so some of the girls that probably are going to play more maybe didn’t play as much as they should have tonight, so it’s just hard.”

Valley is trying a two-setter system after running a one-setter system during Derf’s first season as coach last year.

“It needs to be better,” Derf said of the team’s communication level. “We’ve got work to do. … We’ve got a bunch of drills that we do, and the focus is communication, so that’s probably what we’re going to work on tomorrow night in practice.”

Argos at Valley, varsity only, Saturday: The Argos-Valley volleyball match scheduled for Saturday is varsity only and will start at 1 p.m. at Valley. The match will be the season opener for both teams.
