Weaver headlines all-RTC girls golf team

BY VAL TSOUTSOURIS

Sports Editor, RTC

While we did not have a state qualifier like we did last year when Rochester’s Kristianna Lingenfelter earned a trip to Prairie View Golf Club, this was a year of good balance around the area in girls golf as we had good players from a number of teams.

The most successful girls golf team in the RTC area in 2021 was Winamac, who won their second straight Hoosier North title.

Winamac was also the only area team that advanced to the regional.

But our choice for the RTC Player of the Year is Tippecanoe Valley junior Madelyn Weaver. She is the No. 1 player on what we thought was the best team in the area.

She hits the ball long and straight off the tee and also had an accurate short game.

This list is based on results, conversations with area players and coaches and our own observations.

We place a greater emphasis on performance in the 18-hole tournaments, especially the conference and postseason tournaments, over the nine-hole midweek dual matches.

First team

  • Madelyn Weaver (Tippecanoe Valley) (RTC Player of the Year) – Valley coach Thadd Mellott raves about the time Weaver invests in the game. She has the results to back it up.

  • Ava Thomas (Rochester) – Thomas might be a freshman, but she showed off a mature game and an ideal disposition for golf. She could put a bad shot out of mind and follow it with a great shot.

  • Keira Bucinski (Winamac) – Bucinski was the No. 1 player on the No. 1 team in the area,

  • Bianca Huizar (Winamac) – Huizar might have been the area’s most improved player, and her 96 at the Twin Lakes sectional was one of the clutch rounds of the year. She also had the team’s low round at the regional.

  • Molly Moriarty (Tippecanoe Valley) – Moriarty was one of the area’s most consistent performers this year, and she arguably saved her best round of the year for sectionals.

Honorable mention

  • Payton Moore (Rochester)

  • Lily Ault (Tippecanoe Valley)

  • Kaydence Mellott (Tippecanoe Valley)

  • Janet Calfee (Winamac)

  • Ashlynn Brooke (Pioneer)

  • Olivia Link (Winamac)

  • Giselle Lowry (Winamac)

  • Cheney Canada (Tippecanoe Valley)

  • Kat Rensberger (Rochester)
