Culver at North Judson, 7:30 p.m. Eastern
New Culver associate coach and offensive coordinator Austin Foust’s first game comes against a North Judson defense that held Culver to six points in two games combined last year.
They lost top defensive lineman Brendan Benson to graduation but have an all-state defensive lineman returning in Logan Radtke that will challenge the new Culver interior linemen of Steven Pugh, Ben Lee and Devin Burkett.
In addition, North Judson has an all-Hoosier North linebacker in Quinton Frasure who will try to help in stopping new Culver quarterback Jason Cadle and senior running backs Shane Shuman and Emiliano Ortiz.
On the other side of the ball, Culver must try to stop Cheyenne Allen, who has scored 43 career touchdowns. Two of those touchdowns came in last year’s 40-6 win over Culver in the Class 1A, Sectional 41 final.
“They return a lot of guys,” Culver coach Mike Zehner said. “Number 40, Cheyenne Allen, he’s been their guy for the last three years, and it’s going to be no different this year. We’re probably going to get a heavy dose of him. I think the sophomore (Connor) Benson kid at fullback, he was impressive as a freshman. I think he was as good or better than the kid they had at fullback there. Nothing to take away from the (Owen) Frasure kid who was a senior last year, but the Benson kid is the real deal. … It seems like they are physical up front. They’ve got guys that fly to the football. They’re aggressive on defense. They’re going to be a load. They’re a top five team in 1A for a reason.”
North Judson won their first regional since 2002 last year before falling to Adams Central in the semistate. They have won their last seven meetings with Culver, including the last three years in the sectional.
