Winamac boys track finishes 5th at Rensselaer sectional

Wegner, C. Cardenas advance in 2 events each; Schultz, A. Cardenas, Tankersley also move on

Kolbey Wegner and Cristian Cardenas advanced to the regional in two events each and helped lead the Winamac boys track team to a fifth-place showing out of 13 teams at

the Rensselaer sectional Thursday.

Wegner, a junior, placed third in the 3,200 meters in 10:01, and Cardenas, a senior, was fifth in the 300 hurdles in 44.13 seconds. Wegner and Cardenas also formed half of the 4 x 800 relay team that finished third in 9:01.24 along with Andrew Cardenas and Tyler Tankersley.

Senior Logan Schultz also advanced by finishing third in the shot put with a throw of 44-5.

Those who finished in the top three in their event earned automatic regional berths. Cristian Cardenas got a regional callback in the 300 hurdles as his was one of the four best performances among those athletes who feed into the regional.

The other feeder sectionals are Crown Point, Highland and Portage.

Valparaiso High School will host the regional at 6:30 p.m. Eastern May 26.

Kankakee Valley won the sectional with 110 points. Rensselaer was second with 94.
