The Winamac baseball team defeated No. 10 Boone Grove 8-7 Monday to win the Class 2A, Sectional 34 title at Boone Grove.

Winamac improved to 18-4. They had already won the Hoosier North title with a 13-1 conference mark, and the sectional crown is their first since 1999.

Winamac will play Illiana Christian at Whiting High School at approximately 1 p.m. Eastern on Saturday in a regional semifinal. Eastside will play Fairfield in the first semifinal at approximately 11 a.m. Eastern, and the winners return at 7 p.m. Eastern for the regional final.

Winamac led 7-0 after two innings. Tyler Perry, Hayden Clark and Caleb Good all homered.

But Boone Grove rallied to tie the game with two runs in the fourth inning and five more in the sixth.

Winamac scored in the top of the seventh to reclaim the lead, and Caleb Seymour pitched out of a jam after the Wolves put runners on first and third with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh.

Winamac’s 11-player roster includes nine seniors and two sophomores. The seniors are Dylan Brown, Carter Field, Russell Compton, Mitchell Bonnell, Seymour, Perry, Clark, Good and Jaiden Klingerman.

Marcus Kay, a former assistant coach at Caston, has been the Winamac coach since 2018.
