Argos goes 1-1 at Logansport holiday tourney (Dec. 30): The Argos girls basketball team went 1-1 at the Mike Anderson Auto Group Holiday Tournament at the Berry Bowl at Logansport on Dec. 30.

They lost to Northwestern 54-49 in the first round before coming back to beat Logansport 54-50 in the consolation game. They are now 6-10 on the season.

Samantha Redinger hit seven 3-pointers and scored 37 points against Northwestern, but the Lady Tigers rallied from a 19-point third-quarter deficit to stun the Lady Dragons in the first round.

Anna Bishir led Northwestern with 15, and Berkley Wray added 14.

Morgyn Barcus found Ellie Bollenbacher for a layup that tied the game at 49 with 2:15 left, but Northwestern scored the final five points to claim the win.

Lexi Hale’s steal and layup with 40 seconds left gave Northwestern the lead, and Hale split a pair of free throws with 28.2 seconds left.

After a Bollenbacher missed layup, Bishir secured the win by making two free throws with 1.6 seconds left.

Argos started with a 15-2 run and led by 11 after one quarter. Redinger outscored the entire Northwestern team 21-12 in the first half as Argos jumped out to a 16-point lead.

Two more treys from Redinger on consecutive possessions in the third quarter as the lead reached 34-15.

But Northwestern answered with a 21-4 run that Makenna Adams capped with a 3 from the top of the key 35 seconds into the fourth quarter. That cut the lead to 38-36.

Two more Redinger treys kept the lead at 44-38, but Aams hit a 3 from the right corner and a 19-footer from the top of the key. When Wray hit a lefty hook in the lane with 4:27 left, Northwestern had their first lead.

Alydiah Leed scored on a driving layup for Argos, but Wray banked in a leaner to put Northwestern back up 47-46. Bollenbacher tied with a free throw before a Wray putback put Northwestern back ahead.

Argos coach Scott Jennings said the team had a “letdown” in the second half. He also said the team was “not mentally tough.”

“They stepped up and knocked down some shots, and you have to give them credit for that,” Jennings said. “But defensively, our plan was to come out the first three minutes out of halftime and stick it to them, and we didn’t get the job done. We just let them line it up out there. Defensively, when they hit a couple shots, we’ve got to tighten it up a little bit. We didn’t do that.”

In the consolation game, Redinger scored 25 points, including a 3-pointer from the left corner with 2:41 left that put Argos ahead for good at 49-46.

Redinger was fouled in the act of shooting a 3 and hit three free throws to increase the lead to six with 1:45 left.

Logansport played a box-in-one defense on Redinger.

“She’s obviously a great player,” Logansport coach Chris Keisling said of Redinger. “Certainly, she’s what keeps Argos going. I didn’t really say this to the girls, but I think she averages right at 30 a game, and I think we were averaging 32 as a team going into that game, so I said we will work on making sure we hold her down. Probably at least having 25 was a modicum of success. We were trying to get her below 20 if we could. But she’s just a darn good player. There’s no doubt about it.”

Leed added 13, and Morgyn Barcus and Bollenbacher added seven each for Argos.

Lydia Goad had 19 to lead Logansport. Rylinn Spradling added nine, and Aracyn Good had eight.

Argos led 44-31 in the fourth quarter after a Leed triple, but the Lady Berries answered with a 15-2 run to tie it. Goad had 10 points in the fourth quarter, and Good hit a pair of free throws with 2:59 left to equalize the score at 46.

“It’s still what we’re lacking,” Jennings said when asked what the win said about the team’s mental toughness. “We get a little bit of a lead, and then we let them come back in again. We’ve just got to be able to put 32 minutes. We’ve got to get better defensively. We see it in practice. We see glimpses of it for just a quick instance during games, but we’ve got to be able to put really good quarters together to beat good teams, and until that happens, we are just not consistent defensively. And we’re going to work on that. … Right now, we’re playing average basketball, and these teams with weaker records see that, and they look at that as an opportunity to beat us. And so until we take it to that next level and bring that pressure like we can and like we do in practice, we’re going to be average.”

The game was tied at 21 at halftime, but Leed scored nine points in the third quarter to help Argos take a 39-30 lead. She hit a 3 from the left corner and a 3 from the right wing and then drove coast to coast after a rebound and scored and was fouled and completed the 3-point play to give Argos a nine-point lead.

Leed and her teammates can sometimes get open looks just because of the attention that Redinger receives.

“I think we try really hard to get a lot of the pressure off Sam by screening and stuff, so getting those open shots for us can happen along the way,” Leed said.

Said Jennings: “Alydiah, when she can catch and get her feet set, she’s deadly.”

Northwestern went on to beat Wheeler 42-34 in the title game. Wheeler had beaten Logansport 43-36 earlier Saturday in the first round.
