Argos tames Tigers, advances to sectional semis

Richard scores game-high 16, Morris, Kindig also in double figures

Argos 61, LaCrosse 40 (Tuesday): Michael Richard scored eight of his game-high 16 points in the first quarter as Argos was able to knock off LaCrosse in a Class 1A, Sectional 50 quarterfinal at Culver Tuesday.

J.J. Morris scored seven of his 13 points in the first quarter. Dylan Kindig added 12.

Carter Burkholder scored 15 points, and Ben Garwood had 14 for LaCrosse (4-18), who finished the season on a seven-game skid.

Argos led 28-21 at halftime and extended the lead to 48-28 after three quarters.

Argos will play Culver, whom they have already beaten twice this season, in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Friday.

This was the first Argos-LaCrosse meeting since the 1986-87 season.

In Tuesday’s second quarterfinal, Ashton Oviedo poured in four 3-pointers and a game-high 18 points for Triton in an 88-38 win over West Central.

Cole Shively and Tyson Yates had 11 points each, John Gardner and Bruce Johnson had nine each, and Cole McKinney and Chandler Westafer had eight each.

Already leading 41-23 at halftime, Triton outscored West Central 29-5 in the third quarter to up the lead to 70-28.

Triton will play Oregon-Davis at 8 p.m. Friday in the semifinals.

Garrett Leman led West Central (0-19) with 14. West Central has lost 47 consecutive games overall and has not won a sectional game since 2013.
