Despite wins for Hisey, Bode, Bradley, Culver Academy girls swimming beats Rochester

Seuferer’s comeback in the 200 free relay, wins in butterfly, breaststroke come in loss to Eagles

Jake Seuferer’s willingness to put in extra work was on display during the Rochester boys swimming team’s meet against Culver Academy at the Rochester Middle School pool Monday, according to coach Stephanie Brown.

However, it did not transfer into a team win.

Culver Academy beat the Zebras 121-65, and they also won the girls meet 106-59 for the sweep.

Culver Academy won nine of 12 events in both meets.

Melody Hisey

Rochester’s Melody Hisey won the 50 freestyle, Elena Bode won the 100 freestyle, and Kendyll Bradley won diving.

Boys

Seuferer had a role in all three Zebra wins in the boys meet. He won his two individual events, taking the 100 butterfly in 1:01.91 and edging out Culver Academy’s Jack Collins by 0.28 seconds in the 100 breaststroke with a winning time of 1:10.72.

He also swam the anchor leg on the victorious 200 freestyle relay, coming from behind to beat Culver Academy’s Bucket Youvan by 0.11 seconds – 1:43.19 to 1:43.30. Seuferer swam a 23.12 in his leg. Jake Freeman, Wes Steininger and Dylan Steininger joined him on the team.

“He’s going to give it everything he has,” Brown said. “He works hard every day in practice, and … he gives me everything he has every day. He never questions anything. He works hard. He never says, ‘I can’t do it.’ He’ll hit a certain time in practice, and I’ll say, ‘Can you go a second faster?’... He goes, ‘I’ll try,’ and he usually does it every time. And this is where that stuff pays off, where you can out-touch somebody to the wall where you push yourself past that pain threshold.”

Rochester boys finishing second in an individual event included Dylan Steininger, who was second in the 200 freestyle, and Tanner Reese, who was second in the 100 freestyle. His leg in the 400 freestyle relay was a 1:02 after swimming a 1:01.81 in the open 100 freestyle.

“Tanner Reese is just doing phenomenal,” Brown said. “He had another PR (personal record) tonight, I think, in both of his events.”

Brown also praised Wes Steininger in both the 500 freestyle and 200 individual medley and added that Dylan Steininger “had a really good night,” including a season-best 1:15.53 in the 100 breaststroke.

Bradly Bickle and Kadin Kelly finished second and third, respectively, in diving. Kelly, a senior, is a three-time regional qualifier. Culver Academy’s Reid Omilian, who finished 14th at last year’s state meet, won the diving with 307.90 points.

Girls

The 50 freestyle turned out to be a duel between Hisey and Bradley. Hisey touched first in 29.92 seconds, followed closely by Bradley (30.00) and Culver Academy’s Evelyn Tabor (30.19).

“50 free was good,” Brown said of Hisey. “She has not been under 30 seconds. I think she’s only been under 30 seconds one or two times, so that was a really good time for her. She had a really good meet. She had a couple good relay splits also.”

Bode won the 100 freestyle from Lane 1. She extended her lead in the second half of the race and won in 1:00.24. Bode was also second in the 200 freestyle.

Bradley edged freshman Ava Thomas in diving 126.50-126.25. Both Bradley, a junior, and Thomas, a freshman, are first-time divers.

“She and Ava are splitting their time between swimming and diving,” Brown said. “So they’re really enjoying it. It’s new for both of them. They’re really enjoying learning it. They’re having a good time.

“Kendyll doesn’t really have much fear, and that comes in handy with diving, I think. She’s just so naturally athletic and works really hard.”

Brown also noted good times from Molly Vance-Gruss in both the 200 individual medley (2:55.17) and 100 backstroke (1:20.62).
