Harness scores 16, leads shorthanded Caston past Rossville

Lady Comets beat Winamac for the first time in 20 years

Girls basketball

Caston 40, Rossville 35 (Tuesday): Bailey Harness scored 16 points, and Addison Zimpleman added 12 for the Lady Comets in a road win over Rossville Tuesday.

Caston held Rossville to two points in the fourth quarter. The game was tied 33-33 after three quarters.

Caston is 4-1. All four wins are against teams that beat them last year.

Caston played without sophomore sharpshooter Abby Williamson, junior forward Maddi Smith and senior post player Jordan Clingler.

Harness also had a team-high seven rebounds. Isabel Scales had four assists and seven steals to go with her three points.

Kinzie Mollenkopf had four points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals.

Caston also won the JV game 38-13. Mikayla Kinser led Caston with 14 points and nine rebounds, and Macee Hinderlider had 12 points. Annie Harsh had six, Alexa Finke had four, and Mollenkopf had two.

Caston 41, Winamac 31 (Saturday): Isabel Scales scored 11 of her game-high 13 points in the first half to lead the host Lady Comets past Winamac Saturday in the Hoosier North opener for both teams.

The win was Caston’s first over Winamac since the 1999-2000 season.

Scales hit three 3-pointers in the first half. Jordan Clingler added eight points.

Caston played without Maddi Smith and Abby Williamson.

Aubrey Gearhart led Winamac (1-2, 0-1) with eight points. Kingsley Kroft and Ella Gearhart had six each.

Caston led 28-19 at halftime.

“The Comets, once again challenged with a short bench, were able to work together as a team and play team defense and have balanced scoring to come away with the win on their home court,” Caston coach Josh Douglass said in a statement.

Winamac took the JV game 37-19. Alexa Finke and Emma Kay led Caston with five points each. Macee Hinderlider had three, and Haley Logan, Kinzie Mollenkopf and Ann Ulerick had two points each.

Winamac JV stats were not provided to RTC.

North White 32, Caston 24 (Friday): Isabel Scales scored 15 points and grabbed four rebounds, but the host Lady Comets lost to sectional rival North White Friday.

Jordan Clingler had four points and six rebounds. Addison Zimpleman and Annie Harsh had two points each, and Kinzie Mollenkopf had one.

Olivia Allen had 13 points for North White. Tessa Robertson had seven.

North White led 18-16 at halftime. After scoring 12 points in the first quarter, Caston scored 12 points in the last three quarters combined.

North White also edged Caston 27-26 in the JV game. Harsh had 11 points and five rebounds, and Emma Kay had eight points and five rebounds. Macee Hinderlider had six points, and Mollenkopf had one.

Haley Logan contributed six rebounds, and Alexa Finke had five boards.

Caston to limit 2 tickets per participant

The Caston athletic department announced this week that there will be a limit of two entries or tickets per participant moving forward.

Those wanting to attend high school wrestling events or any junior high or fifth grade athletic events are to purchase their tickets at the gate and state their relationship with the participant.

Those wanting to attend girls or boys basketball games must purchase their tickets via presale only. Tickets will be sold in the athletic office only. Present your ticket at the gate and state your relationship to the participant.

Masks are required for any home athletic event. Masks should only be removed when eating or drinking and worn at all other times.

Spectators must wear a mask upon entering restrooms and display social distancing in restrooms. Spectators in line at the concession stand must also wear a mask. Please stay six feet away from the next patron.
