Kelly sets RHS diving record, but Valley boys win in final event

RHS wins final event, secures win over Valley girls

BY VAL TSOUTSOURIS

Sports Editor, RTC

Rochester junior diver Kadin Kelly worked with Scott Secrest over winter break. Then he went out and beat Secrest’s school record.

That was just one compelling subplot of a compelling swimming meet between Tippecanoe Valley and RHS at the Rochester Middle School pool Tuesday.

Rochester won the girls meet 89-82, but Valley won the boys meet 86-82.

It’s believed to be the first time in at least a decade that Valley has beaten Rochester in either a girls or boys meet.

The RMS pool has new LED clocks that are much better in keeping track of times. But the pool does not have team scoreboards.

So the swimmers might not have known how close the meets exactly were going into the meet-closing 400 freestyle: Rochester led the girls meet 79-78 and the boys meet 78-76.

Valley only entered one team in the girls 400 freestyle relay. So they had to win the relay in order to win the meet. But the RHS team of Zoe Seward, Elena Bode, Ellie Shank and Makenna Beall won the race in 4:19.62 to clinch the win. Valley’s team of Katelyn Lowman, Alejandra Jimenez, Katelyn Stump and Olivia Wilson took second in 5:15.60, and RHS’ Ashlynn Hudkins, Molly Vance-Gruss, Macie Nelson and Elizabeth Swango took third in 5:25.77.

In the boys 400 freestyle relay, Valley’s Brandon Hoffman, Karl Parker, Logan Hummitch and Carson Parker won in 3:45.45 and the RHS team of Layne Backus, Dylan Steininger, Wes Steininger and Jake Seuferer was second in 3:50.05.

So it came down to third place and a showdown between Valley’s Bobby Burke and RHS’ Tanner Reese on the anchor leg. Burke and his team touched the wall in 4:33.58, and Reese and his team touched in 4:34.69.

Valley had won the meet. Had RHS finished third, the meet would have ended in a tie.

“It was a fun meet,” Rochester coach Stephanie Brown said. “We’ve got a couple boys that weren’t here tonight, and like I said, we put some kids in some different events. With sectionals and conference coming up, we don’t want them to become stagnant and swimming the same events over and over. So we kind of shuffled things around a little bit … We focus way more on the individual, and we had a lot of PRs tonight, which was fun, which is why we put kids in other events. … They get a little bit of drive to get through the rest of the season. Because they’re exhausted. It was a fun meet. The kids did great, and that’s the stuff we focus on.”

While RHS was missing some swimmers, Valley had all its boys swimmers back.

TVHS swimming coach Katelyn Bradley

“It’s great, it’s great,” Valley first-year coach Katelyn Bradley said. “And it was so close too. I’m glad we finally have all our boys back. Our girls, we’re still missing one. So it’s always with these close meets. We had a close meet with Manchester and we were missing one then too. If we had everyone, we would have got it.

“It was really great. I’m really happy with the performance of everyone. We had a lot of cut times, especially in our 500.”

Girls

Valley won seven girls events while RHS won five. Valley also started with essentially a six-point head start as RHS has no girls divers.

But with the exception of diving, RHS finished second in every event that Valley won. RHS also overcame a swimmer being disqualified in the 200 individual medley, which cost them two points.

Beall won three blue ribbons for RHS, taking the 50 and 100 freestyles and swimming the anchor leg on the clinching 400 freestyle. Other RHS winners included Seward in the 500 freestyle and Bode in the 100 backstroke.

Beall’s time of 26.71 seconds in the 50 freestyle set a new personal best, and her 57.44 in the 100 freestyle tied her PR.

Valley’s Makena Smith and Shayleigh Honeycutt won four blue ribbons each. Smith won the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, and Honeycutt won the 200 individual medley and diving. Smith and Honeycutt also formed half of the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams.

“It’s kind of a weird balance,” Bradley said of Honeycutt’s unique combination of events. “Some days, she does a full practice. Some days, she does 45 minutes of diving and the rest of the practice swimming. She’s been doing steady with her stuff, really improving on her diving.”

Maddie Woodward and Kendall Craig teamed with Smith and Honeycutt on both victorious relays.

Craig also won the 200 freestyle in 2:17.13.

Boys

Valley also won seven of the 12 boys events. Hoffman, the two Parkers and Hummitch also teamed to win the 200 medley relay.

Carson Parker also won two individual events, winning both the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle. Hoffman won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, and Karl Parker won the 100 breaststroke.

Karl Parker, however, could not chase down RHS’ Dylan Steininger in the 200 freestyle.

Dylan Steininger

Steininger won in 2:09.37 as compared to Karl Parker’s 2:09.78. Other RHS individual winners included Kelly, Layne Backus in the 50 freestyle and Jake Seuferer in the 500 freestyle.

“Dylan had a good night,” RHS coach Stephanie Brown said. “He had a personal best time in both of his events. They were both PRs for him, so he had a good meet.”

Backus and Steininger teamed with Anthony Peterson and Peyton Hiatt to win the 200 freestyle relay.
