Pioneer sports briefs: E. Lewellen, Klepinger score 9 each in boys home loss to Lewis Cass

Blickenstaff scores 12, but Lady Panthers suffer 2nd conference loss

Boys basketball

Carroll (Flora) 46, Pioneer 22 (Saturday): The visiting Panthers fell to Carroll (Flora) Saturday to drop to 2-8.

Lewis Cass 43, Pioneer 35 (Friday): Ezra Lewellen and Hunter Klepinger scored nine points each, but Pioneer could not escape from a 16-2 hole after one quarter and lost at home to Lewis Cass Friday.

Drew McKaig and Addai Lewellen scored five points each.

Luke Chambers led Lewis Cass with 11 points, and Tyson Good had 10, all in the first quarter.

Lewis Cass led 22-13 at halftime.

Pioneer trailed 29-24 after three quarters but closed the game on an 11-2 run in the fourth quarter.

Drew McKaig made both Pioneer 3-pointers and added seven.

Pioneer beat Faith Christian for the sixth straight year.

Both teams are 2-6.

Girls basketball

North Judson 61, Pioneer 40 (Tuesday): Madison Blickenstaff scored 12 points for the Class 1A, No. 6 Lady Panthers in a Hoosier North home loss to North Judson Tuesday.

Olivia Brooke had eight points, Brooklyn Borges and Hailey Cripe had seven each, and Mackenzie Walker had six.

Lilliann Frasure scored a game-high 24 points for North Judson. Morgan Burkett had 19, and Sophia Frasure had 14.

North Judson made eight 3-pointers while Pioneer made just one.

The loss broke Pioneer’s nine-game winning streak and dropped them to 12-4 overall and 3-2 in the Hoosier North.

North Judson led 34-15 at halftime.

Pioneer girls stay at No. 6: The Pioneer girls basketball team remained at No. 6 in this week’s Class 1A coaches poll. That’s their second straight week at No. 6. Pioneer has been ranked in the top 10 in every poll this season.

Brooke nominated for player of week: Pioneer senior forward Olivia Brooke was nominated for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association/Fraciscan Health player of the week award for District 1 girls for the week of Jan. 11.

Brooke scored 26 points and grabbed five rebounds in a 67-45 win over Maconaquah on Jan. 12. She had 17 points and 13 rebounds in a 55-40 win over Argos on Jan. 16.

The award went to Crown Point junior Jessica Carrothers.

Pioneer adds game with John Glenn: Pioneer has added a game with John Glenn to its schedule. Game time is noon/1:30 p.m. (JV/Varsity) Saturday at John Glenn.

Southwood at Pioneer, canceled: The Southwood-Pioneer girls basketball game scheduled for Jan. 14 was canceled due to coronavirus-related issues at Southwood.

Pioneer 37, Argos 35 (JV, Saturday): Adeline Cripe and Gracie Hopper scored nine points each, and Kaia Murray added eight for the Pioneer JV in a home win over Argos Saturday. Kylie Attinger and Katelyn Duncan added four points each, and Bryleigh Binney had three.

Cailey Markley led Argos with 10 points. Carly Ellis added eight, Amanda Fajardo and Aleasia Sarver had six each, Samantha Redinger had three, and Sophia Austin had two.
