The Rochester boys wrestling team went 1-3 and finished in eight place out of 12 teams at the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Class 1A Team State Duals at Adams Central Saturday.
Rochester won their first-round match over Milan 44-35 but lost to North Miami 60-18 in the quarterfinals, to Eastside 52-30 in the consolation round and to Northfield 42-39 in the seventh-place match.
Juniors Layne Horn and Brant Beck remain undefeated on the season.
In the win over Milan, Braddock Behling (144), Wyatt Davis (175), Derek Wortley (190) and Mason Hisey (215) won by fall; Declan Gard (HWT) won by technical fall; and Clarence Garrett (150) won by decision. Horn (138) and Beck (157) won by forfeit.
Beck won by fall in the loss to North Miami. Davis won by technical fall, Horn by major decision, and Gard won by decision. Horn’s 12-3 major decision win came against Jordan Korreckt, who won the 126-pound title at the Rochester John McKee Memorial Invitational on Dec. 21 and who is ranked No. 17 at 126, per IndianaMat.com. Horn won the 132-pound title at the McKee Invitational and is ranked No. 5 at 132, per IndianaMat.com.
North Miami would later go on to win the title.
Zebras recording first-period falls against Eastside included Davis, Hisey, Gard and Horn. Beck won by forfeit.
Beck moved up to 165 and won by fall against Northfield. Davis, Derek Wortley (190), Hisey and Gard also won by fall. Garrett moved up to 157 and won by decision. Horn won by forfeit.
Rochester wins 9 of 10 contested matches vs. Valley
The Zebras began the week with a 54-11 win over Tippecanoe Valley in a home dual on Jan. 8.
Rochester wrestlers earning falls included Konor Fugate (126), Horn (132), Matthias Field (144), Beck (157), Davis (175) and Hisey (215).
Behling (150) won by technical fall. Garrett (165) and Wortley (190) won by decision. Gard (HWT) won by forfeit.
Rochester won nine of the 10 matches that were contested.
