Scales scores 12, but 1A, No. 11 Caston falls to undefeated Knox


Lady Comets make 14 of 16 from line but can’t overcome 18-2 deficit

Girls basketball

Knox 41, Caston 35 (Thursday): Isabel Scales scored 12 points, but Class 1A, No. 11 Caston could not overcome an 18-2 deficit after one quarter and suffered a Hoosier North home loss to Class 3A, No. 10 Knox Thursday.

Scales and Jordan Clingler each scored four points in the fourth quarter. Clingler had eight for the game, and Addison Zimpleman scored five of her seven points in the second quarter.

Scales also had six rebounds and five assists. Abby Williamson had a team-high nine rebounds.

Remi Jordan scored 14 points for the Lady Redskins, who improved to 10-0 overall and 3-0 in the Hoosier North. They are 6-0 against Caston since the schools became Hoosier North rivals in 2015.

Caston (8-4, 2-2) had lost the previous five meetings against Knox by an average margin of 37 points per game.

Knox made eight of 18 free throws while Caston went 14 for 16.

Knox also prevailed in the JV game 28-27. Kinzie Mollenkopf had a double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds) to lead Caston (7-4). Macee Hinderlider had seven, Annie Harsh and Mikayla Kinser had four each, and Alexa Finke had two.

Caston draws North Miami at Miami County Invite: Caston will play North Miami at 6 p.m. Dec. 29 at North Miami in the first round of the Miami County Invitational.

Peru will play Maconaquah in the other first-round game at noon Dec. 29.

The consolation game will be held at noon Dec. 30. The championship game is at 6 p.m. Dec. 30.

North Miami is the four-time defending tournament champion. Caston has never appeared in the championship game since they began playing in the tournament in December 2017.

Parents and guardians may only purchase tickets at the gate. Two tickets will be allowed per rostered household. Tickets are $5. No tournament passes will be issued.

Masks will be required at all locations at all times. Parents are asked to be socially distanced in the bleachers.

Boys basketball

Caston draws North Miami at Miami County Invite: Caston will play North Miami at 2 p.m. Dec. 29 at Peru in the first round of the Miami County Invitational.

Peru will play Maconaquah at 8 p.m. Dec. 29 in the other first-round game.

The consolation game is at 2 p.m. Dec. 30. The championship game is at 8 p.m. Dec. 30.

Peru has won the tournament seven consecutive years.

Parents and guardians may only purchase tickets at the ticket table at Peru High School. Two tickets will be allowed per rostered household. Tickets are $5. No tournament passes will be issued.

Masks will be required at all locations at all times. Parents are asked to be socially distanced in the bleachers.

Caston “C” team wins home tourney: The Caston “C” boys basketball team won a tournament on its home floor Saturday.

Caston beat Maconaquah 27-23 in the title game. Caleb Stinson scored a team-high 10 points, and Corbin Smith and Grant Yadon had six each.

In the first round, Caston topped North Miami 40-35. Talon Zeider led with 14 points, and Carter Clingler had eight.


The Caston “C” team beat North Miami and Maconaquah

to win a tournament on its home floor Saturday.
