Valley sports briefs: Volleyball falls to Southwood, finishes 5-4 in TRC

Valley boys tennis falls to Wawasee in sectional semis

Southwood def. Tippecanoe Valley, 25-21, 25-21, 25-12 (Thursday): Bree Sheetz had five kills, and Delaney Wagoner had four kills, 1.5 blocks and 11 digs for Valley in a road loss to Southwood Thursday.

Hayley Backus had two blocks. Brayden Baney had nine digs. Hannah Engstrand had 12 assists.

Southwood also won the JV match 25-23, 25-20.

Bree Sheetz had eight kills. Hannah Engstrand had 24 assists, 14 digs and two blocks. Ashley Butler had six aces.

Valley won the JV match 25-20, 25-17.

Boys tennis

Wawasee 3, Tippecanoe Valley 2 (Oct. 2): Dylan Neese won at No. 2 singles, and Owen Kirchenstien won at No. 3 singles, but the Vikings lost to Wawasee in a sectional semifinal at Columbia City Oct. 2.

Neese won 6-2, 6-4 over Zeke Keim. Kirchenstien topped Devon Kuhn, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4.

Payton Mills lost in straight sets at No. 1 singles, and the doubles teams of Ethan Hartman and Annakin Pettit at No. 1 and Wyatt Reiter and Cooper Walls at No. 2 both lost in straight sets.

Valley finished the season 7-10.

Warsaw beat Whitko 3-2 on Friday and Wawasee 4-1 on Saturday to win their ninth straight sectional.

Boys soccer

Valley 0, Argos JV 0 (Sept. 29): The Valley varsity played to a scoreless draw against the Argos JV on Sept. 29. Tyler Jones recorded the shutout in goal for Valley.

“Valley generated a handful of opportunities but were troubled by the same issues tonight as they have been all season, the inability to finish at the net,” Valley coach Andrew Luce said in a statement. “Defensively, besides Dominguez and Jones, David Reyes, Jesus Baca, Gio Arriagia, Gerardo Fernandez and Jessica Brito all played roles in helping shutout the Dragons.”

Middle school football

TVMS 46, Northfield 0 (8th grade, Tuesday)

TVMS 36, Northfield 0 (7th grade, Tuesday)

Brandon Stiles ran for 214 yards and five touchdowns and also had four tackles, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery on defense for the TVMS eighth-graders in a win over Northfield Tuesday.

Joey Lybarger had 20 yards rushing, and Brock Derf and Asher McGriff each had a rushing touchdown. Wyatt Hart had 16 yards receiving.

McGriff led the defense with seven tackles, including three for loss. He also had two sacks and forced a fumble. Derf had six tackles, including one for loss, and a sack. Colton Crabb had five tackles, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Adin Wagoner had four tackles, including two for loss, and a sack. Nash Miller has two tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery.

In the seventh grade game, Grady Moriarty ran for 57 yards and two touchdowns and also had seven tackles, including two for loss, on defense for the Vikings in the shutout win. He also had a sack and two fumble recoveries. Jamison Phillips ran for 52 yards and returned a punt for a touchdown. Jake England ran for 40 yards and a touchdown, and Landon Patrick had a touchdown run.

Defensively, Gage Overbey had seven tackles, including two for loss. Brent Miller had two tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. Carlos Gonsalez had a sack. Diego Gonsalez recovered a fumble.

TVMS 36, Wabash 14 (8th grade, Sept. 29)

TVMS 48, Wabash 6 (7th grade, Sept. 29)

Brandon Stiles ran for 197 yards and two touchdowns on offense and also had six tackles on defense for TVMS in the eight grade road win Sept. 29.

Wyatt Hart ran for 63 yards and a score, and Asher McGriff ran for 21 yards and a touchdown. Colton Crabb had 19 yards receiving.

Brock Derf and Hart each had seven tackles and forced a fumble. Deondre Hamilton had four tackles. Grady Moriarty recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown. Konnar Fountain recovered a fumble. Tristyn Ragon had an interception.

In the seventh grade game, Wes Parker ran for 56 yards and a touchdown and also returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Grady Moriarty ran for 29 yards and a touchdown and also returned an interception for a score. Jamison Phillips had 20 yards rushing and a touchdown, and Landon Patrick also ran for a score. Isaiah Ault had 13 yards receiving, and Nash Bouse had 10 yards receiving and a touchdown.

Gage Overbey had five tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception. Parker had five tackles and a forced fumble. Moriarty had four tackles, including one for loss, as well as a forced fumble and an interception. Duego Gonsalez had three tackles and a forced fumble. Trevis Hester had a sack. Brick Hall recovered a fumble.
