Winamac junior Beau Brandt finished third in the discus at the Rensselaer sectional Thursday to earn a berth in the regional.

Brandt’s throw of 121-11 edged out Kankakee Valley’s Grant Musch by one inch for third place.

Brandt was Winamac’s only regional qualifier. Winamac scored 35 points and finished ninth out of 13 teams. Kankakee Valley won the sectional with 108 points.

Ten of Winamac’s points came from individual track events, three points came from relays, and the other 22 points came from field events.

Brandt’s teammate Kyle Olds had a throw of 119-8 and finished fifth. Olds also placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 42-0 ¾. He led all Winamac scorers with seven points.

Brandt was ninth in the shot put.

Kolbey Wegner was fourth in the 3,200 meters in 10:45.72 and eighth in the 1,600 in 5:01.16. He missed out on the third spot by 2.18 seconds in the 3,200.

In addition to Wegner, the only other points Winamac got on the track came from freshman John Malchow, who was fifth in 45.95 seconds in the 300 hurdles.

Jason Tankersley was fourth in the pole vault with a clearance of 10-6 in his final prep meet. He lost out on a regional spot to Boone Grove’s Nate Krause, who also vaulted 10-6, on the fewest-misses tiebreaker.

In the long jump, Shaun Pratt was sixth at 18-9 ¼ and Brayden Lynch was eighth at 18-4.

The top relay was the 4 x 100 relay, which took seventh in 47.25 seconds. That team consisted of Lynch, Chase Keller, Brendan Day and Sawyer DePoy. Winamac was also eighth in the 4 x 800 relay.

The top three individuals in each event automatically qualify for the regional.

The regional will be held at Crown Point at 6 p.m. Eastern this Thursday.
