Winamac sports briefs: Sheets, Gearhart homer in loss to Hebron

Baseball drops opener to ranked Carroll (Flora)

Softball

Hebron 6, Winamac 4 (Thursday): Alexis Sheets homered and drove in three runs, and Ella Gearhart went 2 for 2 with a homer and a single for Winamac in a road loss to sectional rival Hebron Thursday.

Samantha Perry had three of Winamac’s nine hits, including a double.

Maggie Smith, Corrin Combs and Emma Goodman had one hit each.

Smith took the loss in the circle. In six innings, she allowed 10 hits and three earned runs. She walked one and struck out none.

Morgan Township 6, Winamac 2 (Tuesday): Ella Gearhart doubled twice and drove in a run, and Ella Hague had a hit and an RBI for Winamac in a loss to host Morgan Township Tuesday.

Maggie Smith, Isabelle Decker, Emma Goodman and Brooke-Lynne Ulerick each had a hit.

Gearhart allowed 10 hits and six runs (four earned) in a complete-game effort. She walked three and struck out five.

Winamac committed three errors which led to two unearned runs for Morgan Township.

South Central (Union Mills) at Winamac, ppd.: The South Central-Winamac softball doubleheader scheduled for Saturday has been postponed. No makeup date has been set.

A JV game was to follow a varsity game.

South Central is a defending regional champion in Class 1A.

Baseball

Carroll (Flora) 11, Winamac 1 (Thursday): Tyler Perry doubled, and Russell Compton singled and scored the lone Winamac run in a season-opening loss to Class 2A, No. 8 Carroll Thursday.

Hayden Clark had a walk and two stolen bases. Compton and Perry each added a stolen base.

Caleb Seymour pitched the first three innings and allowed three hits and three runs (one earned) while walking one and fanning one. Compton and Mitchell Bonnell each pitched two innings in relief. Compton allowed six hits and five earned runs while walking two. Bonnell allowed two unearned runs with three walks and two strikeouts.

Winamac scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth.

Winamac committed four errors which led to five unearned runs for Carroll.

Winamac at Morgan Township, ppd.: The Winamac-Morgan Township baseball game scheduled for Saturday has been postponed. No makeup date has been set. A JV game was to follow a varsity game.

Boys golf

Winamac at LaPorte LaLumiere, ppd.: The Winamac-LaPorte LaLumiere boys golf match scheduled for Friday was postponed and rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. May 2 at LaPorte LaLumiere.

Track

Winamac 81, West Central 41 (boys, Tuesday): Kolbey Wegner won the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters, and John Malchow won the 300 hurdles and long jump for the Winamac boys track team in a road win over West Central Tuesday.

Other Winamac individual event winners included Chase Keller in the 400, Andrew Cardenas in the 800, Cristian Cardenas in the 110 hurdles, Will Biros in the high jump, Beau Brandt in the discus and Kyle Olds in the shot put.

Winamac also won the 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relays. The 4 x 800 relay consisted of Andrew Cardenas, Evan Eaton, Cristian Cardenas and Wegner. The 4 x 400 relay consisted of Malchow, Eaton, Dylan Guilliford and Keller.

Andrew Cardenas was also second in the 1,600. Shaun Pratt was second in the long jump and third in the 400. Eaton was also second in the 400 and third in the 800. Sawyer DePoy was third in both the 100 and 200.

Brandt was also second in the high jump and third in the shot put. Logan Schultz was second in the shot put. Brendan Day was third in the discus.

Results of the girls meet were not made available to RTC.
