Logansport regional roundup: Winamac’s Wilson advances to first semistate

Pioneer wrestlers miss regional due to quarantine

BY VAL TSOUTSOURIS

Sports Editor, RTC

Winamac senior wrestler Isaiah Wilson qualified for his first career semistate after finishing fourth at 170 pounds at the Logansport regional at the Berry Bowl Saturday.

Wilson clinched his semistate bid with an 11-5 win over Lafayette Jeff’s Elijah Brown in his ticket match.

Wilson then dropped his semifinal match by fall in 4:46 to Faith Christian’s Mac Smart and his third-place match to Harrison (West Lafayette)’s Ethan Popp 8-1.

Wilson had previously won the Hoosier North and sectional titles. He will wrestle again at the East Chicago semistate at 10 a.m. Eastern this Saturday.

Wilson’s win over Brown was Winamac’s only win in 11 matches on the day.

Winamac wrestlers who lost their ticket match included Shaun Pratt (120), who lost 6-2 to Lafayette Central Catholic’s Dominic Skees 6-2; Tyler Tankersley (126), who lost to Faith Christian’s Tristan Cain by fall in 2:51; Talan Braun (132), who lost by fall in 5:06 to Harrison’s Tristen Tuttle; Phillip Crippin (145), who lost by fall in 5:21 to West Lafayette’s Valin Hedden; Caleb Good (152), who lost by fall in 5:03 to Lafayette Jeff’s Durya Minor; Tyler Perry (160), who lost by fall in 1:24 to Lafayette Jeff’s Charlie Ensign; Jason Tankersley (182), who lost by fall in 3:16 to Harrison’s Levi Buck; Dakota Smith (195), who lost an 11-4 decision to Delphi’s Kooper Kinsler; and Dylan Penicaro (HWT), who lost by fall in 4:48 to Seeger’s Cade Walker.

Pratt and Jason Tankersley qualified for semistate last year.

Winamac scored six points and finished in 17th place out of 22 teams. Harrison won the regional with 148 points. Harrison won their 13th regional title in school history and their ninth straight.

Meanwhile, none of Pioneer’s three regional qualifiers competed at Logansport. Logan Smith (160), Peyton Schnurpel (170) and Mason Schnurpel (HWT) all withdrew due to quarantine issues, Pioneer athletic director John Bingaman told RTC.
