Winamac sports briefs: Softball, baseball season recaps

Softball

Winamac 11, Delphi 6 (10 innings): Alexis Sheets singled, doubled and homered and drove in three runs, and Ella Gearhart doubled, homered and drove in two runs as Class 2A, No. 6 Winamac earned a come-from-behind road win over Class 2A, No. 13 Delphi May 21.

Catie Perry went 4 for 6. Emma Goodman doubled, singled twice and drove in two runs, and Aubrey Gearhart had a single, a double and two RBIs. Maggie Smith singled, doubled and drove in a run, and Kaya Campbell and Samantha Perry also had two hits. McKenzie Hinz also had a hit.

Winamac trailed 4-0 after five innings and still trailed 5-3 after six. They scored twice in the top of the seventh to tie the game and took their first lead with a run in the top of the eighth. Delphi answered with a run in the bottom of the eighth before Winamac went ahead for good with five runs in the 10th.

Aubrey Gearhart pitched a complete game in the circle. She allowed eight hits and six runs while walking three and striking out seven. Winamac committed four errors, and all six Delphi runs were unearned.

Winamac 14, Triton 0 (5 innings): Emma Goodman singled twice, homered and drove in four runs, and Catie Perry contributed four hits and four RBIs for the Class 2A, No. 6 Lady Warriors in a Hoosier North road win over Triton May 18.

Ella Gearhart also homered and drove in two runs, and Samantha Perry went 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Maggie Smith and McKenzie Hinz had two hits each. Hinz also had an RBI. Kaya Campbell contributed a double and two stolen bases

Hinz pitched a two-hit shutout with no walks and nine strikeouts in the circle.

Winamac scored four runs in the top of the first.

Winamac 17, Frontier 4 (5 innings)

Alexis Sheets, Ella Gearhart, Casey Webb and Aubrey Gearhart all homered, and Kaya Campbell had three hits and an RBI for Winamac in a 17-4 win over Frontier in five innings in the first game of a three-way doubleheader on May 15.

Sheets, Samantha Perry, Aubrey Gearhart and Emma Goodman had two hits each. Madi Conley, Maggie Smith, Ella Gearhart, McKenzie Hinz, Webb and Catie Perry had one hit each.

Webb had four RBIs, Aubrey Gearhart had three RBIs, Ella Gearhart had two RBIs, and Smith, Campbell, Samantha Perry, Sheets, Hinz and Catie Perry had one RBI each.

Hinz pitched a nine-hitter with one walk and four strikeouts for the win. Frontier's four runs came in the fifth after Winamac had built a 17-0 lead.

Winamac had back-to-back eight-run innings in the second and third.

Winamac then followed with a 6-2 loss to Class 1A, No. 4 North Miami despite four more hits and an RBI from Sheets. Catie Perry also had two hits and an RBI.

Smith, Campbell, Samantha Perry and Goodman each had a hit.

Aubrey Gearhart allowed seven hits and six earned runs in seven innings. She walked four and struck out eight.

In the day’s other game, North Miami handled Frontier 9-1.

Winamac 29, LaVille 1 (5 innings): Aubrey Gearhart belted a pair of homers and a single and had eight RBIs, and Emma Goodman homered, singled twice and drove in three as Winamac drubbed LaVille on the road May 13.

Maggie Smith, Samantha Perry, Alexis Sheets and Ella Gearhart had four hits each as part of Winamac’s 28-hit attack. Kaya Campbell and McKenzie Hinz had two hits and two RBIs each, and Catie Perry also had two hits.

Ella Gearhart, who had three of Winamac’s eight extra-base hits, also had three RBIs. Sheets had two RBIs, and Smith had an RBI.

Winamac also received seven walks and stole five bases.

Hinz pitched a four-hitter with two walks and three strikeouts.

Winamac scored nine runs in the first and added 10 more in the second to build a 19-1 lead.

Bremen 15, Winamac 7 (May 10): McKenzie Hinz homered and drove in three runs, and Aubrey Gearhart homered and drove in two, but the host Lady Warriors fell to 2019 Class 2A state champ Bremen on May 10.

Maggie Smith and Ella Gearhart each had a single and a double, and Ella Gearhart also had an RBI. Alexis Sheets and Catie Perry each had a hit and a run scored.

Hinz allowed 16 hits and 13 runs (10 earned) in 3 ⅔ innings in the circle and took the loss. She walked none and struck out four. Aubrey Gearhart allowed five hits and two runs in 3 ⅓ innings of relief. She walked four and struck out five.

Freshman Mickie Shively had four hits and four RBIs for Bremen. Izzy Clinger also had four RBIs.

Bremen scored eight runs in the top of the fourth to build a 13-2 lead.

Winamac goes 2-1 at Twin Lakes Invite: The Winamac softball team went 2-1 at the Twin Lakes Invitational May 7-8. The Lady Warriors beat North Newton 11-6 on May 7 and beat Twin Lakes 5-1 on May 8 before losing to Eastern (Greentown) 14-5 in their final pool play game on May 8.

Maggie Smith had two hits and two RBIs, and Aubrey Gearhart homered and drove in three runs in the win over North Newton. Alexis Sheets also homered and singled and drove in a run, and Emma Goodman singled twice and scored twice.

McKenzie Hinz had a hit and an RBI, and Kaya Campbell contributed a triple. Ella Gearhart also had a hit.

Winamac also received eight walks, including three from Samantha Perry and two from Hinz.

Aubrey Gearhart was the winning pitcher. She allowed 10 hits and two earned runs while walking two and striking out 12.

Winamac scored four runs in the second inning to grab a 5-3 lead, and they never trailed after that.

In the Twin Lakes game, Ella Gearhart doubled, homered and drove in three runs, and Hinz pitched an eight-hitter in the circle for the win. She walked one and fanned three.

Hinz, Smith and Samantha Perry had one hit each. Campbell had an RBI.

Winamac led 2-1 after six innings before scoring three times in the top of the seventh.

In the Eastern game, Aubrey Gearhart had a pair of doubles, and Catie Perry singled twice. Samantha Perry singled and drove in two runs, and Ella Gearhart also had a hit. Campbell and Sheets each had an RBI.

Aubrey Gearhart allowed 19 hits, including three homers, and 14 runs (13 earned) in seven innings. She walked two and struck out two.

Eastern came in ranked No. 4 while Winamac was No. 11 in Class 2A. Winamac led 3-2 after four innings, but Eastern scored four in the fifth to take the lead for good.

Macy Coan doubled, homered twice and had eight RBIs for the Lady Comets.

Winamac was the visiting team against North Newton and Twin Lakes and the home team against Eastern.

Maggie Smith had two singles and a double and an RBI. Kaya Campbell, Samantha Perry and Alexis Sheets also had two hits each.

McKenzie Hinz, Olivia Link, Emma Goodman and Catie Perry had one hit each.

Goodman also had two RBIs, and Campbell and Link each had an RBI.

Winamac had 18 hits and also drew five walks.

Sheets got the win in the circle, allowing two hits and one unearned run in three innings. She walked one and struck out one. Hinz pitched two scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit and fanning two.

Winamac 8, North Judson 0: Alexis Sheets homered and drove in three runs, and Kaya Campbell had two doubles and three RBIs for Class 2A, No. 11 Winamac in a road win over conference and sectional rival North Judson May 3.

Sheets and Campbell supported the pitching of Aubrey Gearhart, who tossed a five-hit shutout with one walk and 10 strikeouts.

Aubrey Gearhart also singled and tripled at the plate, and Emma Goodman had two singles and a double and an RBI. Freshman Casey Webb also had an RBI.

Ella Gearhart had a double, and Samantha Perry and Catie Perry had one hit each.

Aubrey Gearhart, Catie Perry and Brilyn Runyon each stole a base.

Baseball

Winamac 10, Knox 0 (5 innings): Paxton Wallace doubled and homered and drove in two runs, Dylan Brown also had a hit and two RBIs, and Hayden Clark pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts as the host Warriors clinched a share of the Hoosier North title with a five-inning triumph over Knox May 21.

Caleb Good, Russell Compton, Caleb Seymour and Clark each had two hits and an RBI. Carter Field also had a hit. Good and Compton each had a triple, and Seymour and Clark each had a double.

Clark walked one.

Winamac scored five runs in the third and five more in the fourth. Winamac also beat Knox 13-7 on May 7.

Winamac shared the conference title with Pioneer, North Judson and LaVille. All four teams went 10-4 in league play.

Winamac won their last four conference games by a combined score of 66-6.

Dylan Brown also homered and drove in two runs. Tyler Perry had a triple and three RBIs, and Hayden Clark had a double and three RBIs.

Caleb Good, Caleb Seymour, Max Gearhart, Wyatt Wheeler, Michael Loehmer and Max Murray each had an RBI. Good had two hits, and Seymour, Gearhart and Murray each had a hit.

Culver committed nine errors which led to 19 unearned runs for Winamac.

Jason Cadle had a single for Culver.

Max Gearhart had three hits and three RBIs, Tyler Perry had three hits and two RBIs, and Caleb Good had three hits and an RBI. Carter Field also had three RBIs.

Russell Compton singled and doubled and scored three times, and Dylan Brown had two hits and two RBIs. Paxton Wallace had a hit and two RBIs, and Michael Loehmer and Wyatt Wheeler each had a hit and an RBI. Mitchell Bonnell contributed an RBI.

Culver pitchers walked four and hit three batters.

Freshman Brady Kindernay had a single for Culver.

Winamac 15, Pioneer 6 (May 14): Caleb Good singled and homered and drove in two runs, and Tyler Perry had a hit, a sacrifice fly, two walks and three RBIs for the visiting Warriors as they earned a two-game split against Pioneer May 14.

Caleb Seymour had a double and two singles and two RBIs, and Mitchell Bonnell had a hit and two RBIs, Paxton Wllace also had two hits.

Carter Field and Hayden Clark each had a hit and an RBI. Russell Compton also had a hit. Max Murray also had an RBI.

The game included 13 walks and four hit batters.

Winamac also stole six bases, including two each from Seymour and Clark.

Bonnell earned the win on the mound. He allowed six hits and six runs while walking four, hitting three batters and striking out three.

Winamac scored three runs in the top of the first and never trailed.

Pioneer beat Winamac 5-4 in eight innings at Winamac in the series opener May 13.

Winamac and host LaVille split a doubleheader at LaVille on May 8. Winamac won the first game 8-1, and LaVille won the second game 4-1.

Caleb Good went 3 for 3 in Game 1, including a double, and he also had two RBIs. Mitchell Bonnell also had three hits and an RBI and also earned the win on the mound.

Tyler Perry had a hit and two RBIs. Caleb Seymour and Hayden Clark each had a hit and an RBI. Carter Field, Dylan Brown and Paxton Wallace each had a hit.

Winamac also stole seven bases, including two each for Bonnell, Good and Seymour.

Bonnell pitched a five-hitter – all five LaVille hits were singles – with one walk and 11 strikeouts. The only run he allowed was unearned.

In Game 2, Winamac led 1-0 after five innings before LaVille scored twice in the sixth and twice in the seventh.

Seymour had two of the Warriors’ four hits and also drove in the lone run. Good and Clark had one hit each.

Clark took the loss on the mound after allowing four runs (three earned) in 6 ⅔ innings. He allowed five hits and walked four while striking out 11.

Freshman Lucas Plummer pitched a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts for LaVille.

The teams would finish as part of a four-way tie for the conference crown with North Judson and Pioneer.

Winamac was the visiting team in Game 1 and the home team in Game 2.

Winamac 13, Knox 7: Caleb Seymour ripped three singles and had four RBIs, and Tyler Perry also had three hits and scored four times for Winamac in a Hoosier North road win over Knox on May 7.

Winamac trailed 7-2 after two innings before rallying. They scored four runs in the sixth to go ahead for good at 9-7 and then tacked on four more insurance runs in the seventh.

Mitchell Bonnell also had two hits and two RBIs, and Dylan Brown singled and had three RBIs. Hayden Clark had a hit and an RBI, and Caleb Good and Wyatt Wheeler had one hit each.

Knox pitchers also walked six and hit a batter. Knox also committed seven errors that led to eight unearned runs for Winamac.

The Warriors also stole seven bases, including two each for Good and Russell Compton.

Seymour went the first five innings on the mound for the win. He allowed seven hits and seven runs (three earned) while walking two and striking out seven.

Clark notched the save with two innings of hitless relief. He walked two and fanned five.

Lafayette Central Catholic 8, Winamac 1: Hayden Clark singled and doubled and scored the lone Winamac run in the second inning in a road loss to Class 2A, No. 3 Lafayette Central Catholic May 3.

Mitchell Bonnell had an RBI. Caleb Good and Wyatt Wheeler each had a single.

Dylan Brown and Caleb Seymour pitched three innings each. Brown allowed three hits and five runs while walking six and fanning one, and he took the loss. Seymour allowed five hits and three earned runs while walking one and fanning one.

Lafayette Central Catholic scored four runs in the bottom of the second to go ahead for good at 5-1.

Winamac 4, North Judson 3: Winamac scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to break a tie and earn a split of a two-game set against conference and sectional rival North Judson on April 30.

Caleb Seymour had three singles and three RBIs, and Tyler Perry singled and doubled for the Warriors. Caleb Good singled and scored twice, and Hayden Clark singled and scored a run.

Clark pitched a hitless seventh for the win. He struck out one.

Mitchell Bonnell started and went the first six innings. He allowed nine hits and three runs while walking four and striking out six.

Winamac scored three runs in the first, but North Judson countered with two in the third and one in the fourth to tie the game.

North Judson beat Winamac 5-2 on April 29 in the series opener.
